After dinner, Nora dragged four chairs into a square. Ben carried
blankets, pillows, and one sock puppet named Captain Nibble. Dad
raised an eyebrow. "Building a house?" "A castle," Nora said. "With
pajamas and cookies."

The biggest blanket whooshed over the chairs and landed on Ben's
head. He squeaked like a trapped duck. Nora giggled, then fixed the
roof carefully. Inside, the room became smaller, softer, and secret
than before.

Mom brought a flashlight and whispered, "For brave explorers who
brush teeth." Ben saluted with toothpaste foam on his chin. Nora felt
a warm flutter. Bedtime suddenly sounded less boring, maybe even
excellent tonight, somehow.

They crawled inside, knees bumping, blankets breathing above them.
Captain Nibble perched on a pillow mountain. "Tonight," Nora
announced, "this fort is the Snuggle Ship." Ben asked, "Does it serve
snacks?" "Only invisible ones, now."

Nora clicked the flashlight on. A golden circle floated across the
blanket ceiling. Dust sparkled like tiny sleepy bugs. Ben gasped.
"Stars!" Nora's chest lifted. She had made the night appear indoors
with one click.

The Snuggle Ship rocked gently when Dad tucked the blanket edge
under a chair. "Storm's coming," he rumbled. Ben clutched a pillow.
Nora frowned, then whispered, "Only a friendly pajama storm with
soft rain outside."

Mom dimmed the lamp. The fort glowed amber and blue. Rain tapped
the window, polite as fingers. Nora loved the sound, but Ben edged
closer. "What if thunder knocks on our door tonight?" he asked.

Nora wanted to sound captain brave. Her own toes curled, though.
She remembered thunder's big belly voice. "Then," she said slowly,
"we invite it to whisper." Ben blinked. "Thunder can whisper if we ask
nicely first?"

A low grumble rolled outside. The blanket roof shivered. Ben's hand
found Nora's sleeve. Nora swallowed. "Dear Thunder," she called,
"please use your library voice." The next rumble sounded farther
away behind the houses somewhere.

Ben breathed out so hard the pillow fringe wiggled. "It listened!"
Captain Nibble bowed twice. Nora's fear loosened a little, like a knot
untied by warm fingers. The adventure could continue after all tonight
together.

They sailed past the Bookshelf Cliffs, where bedtime stories leaned in
rows. Ben spotted the Laundry Lagoon, a basket overflowing nearby.
"Dangerous socks," he warned. Nora steered with a ruler and nodded
very seriously indeed.

A stuffed whale waited beside the pillow mountain. Nora named her
Madame Splash. "She knows the moon route," Nora said. Ben fed her
one invisible cracker. "For strength," he explained. The whale
approved quite politely.

The flashlight beam became a moon road. It crossed blankets, climbed
pillows, and stopped at Ben's slipper. "Toll booth," Ben declared. Nora
paid with a pretend marshmallow. He inspected it. "Sticky enough.
You may pass."

At the fort's far corner, a gap showed the dark hallway. Nora felt the
room grow wide again. Ben whispered, "Is that space?" Nora scooted
nearer. "Yes," she said, "and we're together in our ship."

Captain Nibble peeked through the gap. Dad's shadow passed
carrying laundry. "Giant moon creature!" Ben hissed. Dad froze, then
waved one sock like a flag. Nora laughed until the fort wobbled and
nearly sneezed twice.

The wobbly roof sagged onto Ben's nose. He made a tiny "mmp." Nora
hurried to lift it, but one chair scraped loudly. Both children froze,
listening for grown up footsteps. None came, only rain tapping softly.

"Maybe ships need repairs," Nora whispered. Ben handed her a hair
tie, two blocks, and his serious face. Together they fixed the sag.
Nora felt proud, not bossy, just useful in the quiet fort.

When the roof held, they lay on their backs. The blanket smelled like
soap and sunshine. Rain made soft popcorn sounds. Ben yawned.
"Captain, are we almost at dreamland?" "Soon." Nora answered,
smiling sleepily now.

Nora shone the flashlight through a blue blanket. The whole fort
turned underwater cool. Madame Splash floated nearby. "Quiet
ocean," Nora murmured. Ben's eyelids drooped. "Do fish wear
pajamas?" he asked. "Only on Tuesdays, probably."

"Probably," Nora said. "Striped ones." Ben smiled without opening his
eyes. The storm outside softened to drizzle. Nora listened to his
breathing, slow as rocking. Her captain feeling changed into calm,
warm and steady inside.

Mom peeked into the fort entrance. "How is the voyage?" she
whispered. Nora raised one sleepy thumb. Ben mumbled, "Fish
pajamas." Mom kissed the air toward them and left the lamp low by
the doorway.

Nora tucked Captain Nibble beside Ben. "He can guard the
marshmallow tolls," she whispered. Ben hugged the puppet. "No
sneaky slippers." Nora pulled the blanket edge closer, making night
feel pocket sized and soft enough now.

Her eyes drifted to the hallway gap. It no longer looked huge. It
looked like a small window to morning. Nora felt brave in a new way:
quiet, cozy, and not alone under warm blankets.

The Snuggle Ship stopped sailing. Rain finished its song. Nora and
Ben slept shoulder to shoulder inside their fort, while Captain Nibble
kept watch, and dreamland opened gently, like a door made of pillows
nearby.
