Bedtime arrived, but Lila's thoughts bounced like tiny frogs. "Not
sleepy," she whispered. Mama tucked the blanket snug. Outside, the
night hummed softly, and a small tap-tap came from the toy chest
nearby, very politely.

Lila lifted the lid. There sat Pip, her little dream boat, rocking on a
puddle of moonlight. "All aboard for Sleepy Sea," Pip said. Lila
giggled. "Boats don't talk." "At night, we do quite nicely."

Mama kissed Lila's forehead. "I'll leave the door open a crack." When
the room grew quiet, Pip nudged the rug. It rippled into water, shiny
and soft, smelling faintly of warm milk and cookies too.

Lila stepped in carefully. The boat wobbled, then bowed like it had
manners. "Please keep elbows inside the imagination," Pip said. Lila
hugged her pillow and felt a fluttery, brave feeling rise inside her
chest.

The window opened without a squeak. Pip slid out, not down, but up,
onto a sea of stars. Lila gasped. The stars made plink-plink sounds,
like spoons stirring cocoa in sleepy cups after supper time.

A Silver Fish jumped beside them and sneezed a sparkle. "Bless you,"
Lila said. "Thank you," said the fish. Pip chuckled. "Starfish catch
starlight colds. Happens every Tuesday, even on Thursdays, when
clocks feel silly."

Soon, Lila heard a soft rumble. Ahead floated the Blanket Cloud, huge
and lumpy. "Is it stormy?" she asked. Pip tipped gently. "No. That
cloud is snoring. Rather loudly, I'm afraid, for a cloud tonight."

Lila smiled, but her tummy gave a nervous squeeze. The house looked
far below, small as a button. "What if I miss Mama?" she asked. Pip
slowed until waves whispered, hush-hush beside the boat's nose.

"Missing is allowed," Pip said. "It means love is waving." Lila breathed
in. The air tasted cool, like minty stars. She waved back at the tiny
window, just in case Mama felt it right away.

They sailed past islands made of yawn. One yawn opened wide and
nearly swallowed Pip's sail. "Excuse me!" Pip squeaked. Lila laughed
so hard her worry slipped overboard with a tiny plop into star water.

A Sock Bird landed on the bow, wearing one sock. "Lost the other," it
mumbled. Lila offered a corner of her blanket. The bird tucked in,
sighed, and dreamed of worm spaghetti with extra cheese.

The Moon rolled nearer, round and friendly. "Small captain," Moon
said, "your eyelids are dipping." "They are not," Lila insisted. One eye
closed to check. The other followed, jealous and slow for a peek too.

Pip rang a bell no louder than a blueberry. Ding. The sea dimmed.
Stars curled around the boat like sleepy kittens. Lila opened one eye.
"Are we there?" "Almost," whispered Pip, "just past the hush."

They passed the Lighthouse of Last Thoughts. Its lamp blinked
pictures: tomorrow's blocks, a banana, Mama's laugh. Lila tried to
grab them. "Let them float," Pip said. "Thoughts know the way home
all by themselves."

Lila let go. The pictures bobbed behind them, cheerful and quiet. Her
hands felt warm around her pillow. "I'm not scared now," she
murmured. Pip's sail puffed proudly. "Excellent steering, Captain,
straight toward cozy harbor."

A gate appeared, made of soft sighs. Two Pajama Seals nodded from
either side. "Password?" one asked. "Little captain." Lila thought
hard. "Please?" The seals clapped. "Perfect. Polite dreams may pass
through gentle splashes tonight."

Inside the gate, the water turned still as held breath. Lila heard her
own heart, lub-dub, small and steady. Sock Bird snored. Silver Fish
yawned bubbles. Even Moon tiptoed overhead without making
moonbeams creak once.

"Pip," Lila whispered, "will you stay?" Pip nudged her knee. "Until
morning tickles your toes." That sounded fair. Lila tucked the blanket
around them both, careful not to wrinkle the sea or spill any stars.

At last they reached Sleep Harbor. No horns blew. No drums banged.
Only soft lights bobbed on the water. Pip tied a ribbon to a dream
dock and gave a satisfied squeak for good parking.

Lila climbed into a little nest of blankets on the boat. Her pillow knew
exactly where to be. "Good night, stars," she said. The stars twinkled
back, very softly, like tiny sleepy giggles overhead tonight.

Pip rocked once, twice, not too much. Lila's brave feeling settled into
calm. She heard Mama humming far away, or maybe the sea. Both
sounded like home. Her eyes closed with a tiny smile there.

Dreams came padding in: a cow on skates, a teacup boat, a cookie
moon. Lila almost laughed, but sleep laid a soft finger on her lips. The
funny dreams tiptoed closer and tucked themselves in.

Back in her room, the rug was only a rug. The window was shut. Mama
peeked in and smiled. Lila slept snugly, one hand resting on Pip, who
looked wonderfully ordinary for a toy boat.

Outside, the stars floated on, keeping watch. In the morning, Lila
would remember a sparkle sneeze, a missing sock, and how love
waves back. For now, the dream boat sailed on deep into gentle
sleep.
