When Lila's lamp clicked low, Teddy Bear blinked from her pillow. The
room smelled of clean pajamas and rain. Lila sighed, already soft with
sleep. Teddy felt her hug still warm around him like sunshine.

Tonight, Teddy heard a tiny sniffle near the rug. It was Moon Mouse,
whispering, 'My blanket slipped.' Teddy slid down carefully, bumping
one paw, then whispered, 'I'm coming. Hush, floorboards. Please be
sleepy and sweet.'

He tucked Moon Mouse under a napkin quilt from tea-time. Moon
Mouse smiled so small only Teddy noticed. 'One goodnight hug?' she
squeaked. Teddy gave one, gentle as a cookie crumb and warm as
toast.

Across the room, Button Bunny sat crooked in the doll cradle. 'My ears
won't lie down,' Bunny huffed. Teddy patted the pillow twice. 'Ears
may sleep any way they like,' he said very very kindly.

Button Bunny tried one ear up and one ear down. That felt perfect.
Teddy hugged her middle. She giggled into the quilt, then went quiet,
except for a happy little nose wiggle under soft moonlight.

From the shelf came a brave, squeaky shout. 'All wheels report to
bed!' Captain Car rolled in circles, too excited to park. Teddy stood in
his path. 'Captain, your garage awaits with cozy shadows tonight.'

Captain Car saluted with a honk that sounded like hic. Teddy tucked
him beside the blocks. 'Can captains dream?' asked Captain Car.
'Certainly,' said Teddy. 'Mostly of puddles you may not splash until
morning comes.'

Near Lila's slippers, Nella Doll watched the dark closet. Teddy knew
that look. 'Too many coats breathing,' Nella whispered. Teddy opened
the closet a crack. 'See? Only coats, being boring and smelling like
soap too.'

Nella Doll gave a shaky laugh. Teddy offered his best squeeze, the
one that pressed worry flat. 'Thank you,' she said. The closet stayed
quiet, too polite to breathe again for the rest of bedtime.

Something thumped beneath the bed. Teddy froze. Then a block
rolled out, followed by Dino, who whispered, 'I fell while practicing
stomps.' Teddy sighed. 'Bedtime stomps are very advanced for one
sleepy dinosaur friend indeed.'

Dino looked embarrassed, which made his tail droop. Teddy brushed
dust from his tummy. 'Tomorrow you may stomp loudly,' Teddy
promised. 'Tonight, try tiny toe thoughts.' Dino nodded, thinking
tiptoe all the way back home.

By the windowsill, the wooden train had lost its last carriage. 'My
caboose is lonely,' puffed the engine. Teddy found it hiding behind a
sock. 'Everyone gets misplaced sometimes,' he murmured, 'even
sensible socks too.'

The train clicked together, snug and proud. Teddy tucked a ribbon
over the engine like a scarf. 'Dream of hills,' he said. The train
answered with one sleepy chuff, then rested beside the tracks
peacefully.

Robot blinked from the book pile. 'I am not tired,' he beeped. His beep
wobbled into a yawn. Teddy smiled. 'Then recharge for pretending not
to be tired tomorrow. That takes great power, little friend.'

Teddy laid Robot on a picture book, straight as a ruler. Robot's lights
stopped blinking. 'Goodnight,' he whispered, softer than buttons.
Teddy felt proud, but his paws were heavy and the room seemed
larger now.

He still had one place to check, the toy box. Inside, the Blocks leaned
in a lumpy tower. 'We cannot sleep,' they clacked. 'We keep thinking
about falling and making a racket on purpose accidentally.'

Teddy nudged the Blocks into a low, friendly wall. No one wobbled.
'There,' he said. 'Sometimes small is safer.' The Blocks clacked softly,
pleased to be boring for once before dreams came tiptoeing through
quietly.

At last, Teddy saw Lucky Duck upside down in Lila's slipper. 'I meant
to do that,' Lucky mumbled. Teddy pulled him free. The slipper made
a pop, like a tiny kiss in the quiet room.

Lucky Duck asked for two hugs, one for each wing. Teddy gave them,
though his own stuffing felt sleepy. He missed Lila's arms. The room
suddenly seemed too wide and full of moon hush tonight.

Then all the toys rustled kindly. Moon Mouse patted a spot. Button
Bunny lifted her quilt. Captain Car whispered, 'Pit stop.' Teddy's chest
warmed. He was not alone at all, not even a little bit.

With help, Teddy climbed back to Lila's pillow. The journey felt
shorter with friends watching. He tucked himself under her hand.
'Last hug,' he whispered, saving the smallest sigh for the end of night
rounds.

Lila stirred and hugged him close without opening her eyes. Teddy's
tired heart went squash, in the nicest way. Around the room, every
toy settled deeper, cuddled by the quiet and a silver hush glow.

Rain tapped the window, tap, tip, tap. Teddy listened. Each sound felt
like counting sheep, only wetter. He smiled into Lila's sleeve. He had
carried her hug everywhere and brought it safely home again tonight.

By morning, no one remembered the scary closet or crooked ears
first. They remembered Teddy's goodnight hug. Teddy remembered
something better, hugs grow warmer when they are shared, then
carried back to bed with love.
